It’s possible the veritable epidemic of sexual assaults faced within the military may finally be coming under a deserved, withering spotlight, as Gillibrand’s forceful stand on the issue earlier this week came in concert with Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s order to review the power afforded to commanders to overturn convictions within the military. Hagel’s decision was spurred by the controversy of an Air Force lieutenant colonel, convicted of sexual assault, only to be reprieved.

WHAT. That doesn’t even compute. Sansa Stark is better than all y’all.

Haters are wrong. She’s better than their favorites. Hell, she’s better than my favorites, and my favorites are without a single constructional flaw. She just happens to have the single most impressively wrought arc in the entire four thousand pages of series. My kids are going to die gorgeous wrenching tragic deaths; she, I think, is going to live. She’s had the perfect courtly arc from the beginning, all stories and manner-as-defense and intrigue-and-intricacy-shaped, and I am so excited to see what she’s capable of becoming.

(Actually—can I talk about the hate, because it’s kind of so many things I hate about this fandom’s relationships with women. They complain about her being “stupid” or “naïve” in her belief in courtly traditions, et. al; they couch her in belittling or destructive terms because of her faith in story structure. Well, okay. I’ll see Sansa’s belief in stories and manner and raise you this quote that I found in A Clash of Kings today that almost dropped my freaking jaw:

“Lady Catelyn, you are wrong. ” Brienne regarded her with eyes as blue as her armor. “Winter will never come for the likes of us. Should we die in battle, they will surely sing of us, and it’s always summer in the songs. In the songs all knights are gallant, all maids are beautiful, and the sun is always shining. ”

This is Brienne of Tarth speaking. Brienne is unilaterally a fandom favorite—loved for her idealism, for her pursuit of chivalry. So why Brienne, then? Brienne is a knight. A lady knight. An ugly lady knight, indeed. Her POV has the same “guileless” ish as Sansa’s; I’d venture to say more, because she gets to keep it longer; Sansa gets savvy and she doesn’t. But it’s okay, because whether or not Brienne is savvy, we the audience get to sit comfortably in the knowledge that she Fights With Swords. And this fandom consistently favors that to absurd degrees—no one’s beloved like Arya is beloved. This wouldn’t be a problem if there wasn’t such an intense tendency to dispense with the rest. Sansa is dumb, Cersei’s a monster, and Catelyn is shrill. Thank heaven for them ladies with the swords, eh?

…but no. But no, actually the narratives of ladyship are way more interesting. We know what happens when you give a knight a sword, okay; spoiler alert: it will involve hitting more knights with swords. I’m much more interested, and it’s much more complicated to write, when the women don’t have edged weapons, when they make do with guile and manner and society and taking agency from the weird commodified space their bodies take up. It takes more. And there are so many interesting women in these books—this series is quite good at this. I have nothing against Brienne of Tarth, okay, but she is not the best thing this series has to offer. Look harder. Look here.)

I think maybe my favorite moment in my AGoT reread (well, no, we all know my favorite, but) was coming across this quote:

Sansa Stark, you have always been more than you seemed. Ugh, most subversive, complicated ladyship narrative ever, resilient beyond belief (when AFFC isn’t about Lannisters ~~or TRAUMA oh wait it’s always about that~~ it’s about her ability to weather—o heavens Stark girls and survival and identity and all painful and superdisturbing but gloriously flawless things, another case of best book worst book, but that’s an essay on its own), going to grow up to be the only person who can beat Littlefinger at his own game or I’ll eat my hat, and the best part is, everyone knows it—there’s a reason all the chessmasters flock to her, and it’s not just Tully charm—but her. She has all the weapons she needs to be the ultimate courtly HBIC. She’ll be formidable the second she realises she’s armed.

I was scrolling back through my Likes and I realized that Isabel wrote this before the show started, so I imagine lots of people didn’t see it.
